The TSS is a temporary visa that lets an employer sponsor a suitably skilled worker to fill a position they can’t find a suitably skilled Australian to fill. This visa has three different streams such as (1) Short-term Stream, (2) Medium-term Stream, and (3) Labour Agreement Stream.
New changes to TSS Visa:
TSS visa applicants are currently required to have full-time work experience in their nominated occupation for at least 2 years in the last 5 years to satisfy the qualification requirements.
As part of Australia’s migration strategy, the Government will reduce the work experience requirement for the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa from two years to one year for all applicants from 23 November 2024 onwards.
SHORT-TERM STREAM
What can you do with this visa?
Work
You can work in Australia for up to 2 years or up to 4 years if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies. Hong Kong passport holders may stay up to 5 years.
Study
You can study but you won’t receive government assistance.
Travel
You can travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid.
Permanent Residency
You can apply for Permanent Residency, if eligible.
To apply in Short-term Stream, you must:
be nominated by an approved sponsor;
be nominated to work in an occupation on the list of eligible short-term skilled occupations;
have at least 2 years of relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field;
have relevant skills and qualifications;
have a positive skills assessment, if required;
work only for your sponsor or associated entity, unless you are exempt;
have health insurance, unless a Reciprocal healthcare agreement applies;
meet minimum standards of English Language Proficiency, unless you are exempt;
meet health requirements; and
meet character requirements.

MEDIUM-TERM STREAM
What can you do with this visa?
Work
You can work in Australia for up to 4 years, or up to 5 years if you are Hong Kong passport holder.
Study

You can travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while visa is valid.
Permanent Residency
You can apply for Permanent Residency, if eligible.
To apply in Medium-term Stream, you must:
be nominated by an approved sponsor;
be nominated to work in an occupation on the list of eligible medium and long-term skilled occupations;
have at least 2 years of relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field;
have a positive skills assessment, if required;
have relevant skills and qualifications;
work only for your sponsor or associated entity, unless you are exempt;
meet minimum standards of English language proficiency unless you are exempt;
have health insurance, unless a Reciprocal healthcare agreement applies;
meet health requirements; and
meet character requirements.

LABOUR AGREEMENT STREAM
What you can do with this visa?

Permanent Residency
You can have your employer sponsor you for permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (SC 186).
To apply in Labour agreement stream, you must:
be nominated to work in a specified occupation under the terms of a Labour Agreement;
have at least 2 years of relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field;
have a positive skills assessment, if required;
have relevant skills and qualifications;
work only for your sponsor or associated entity, unless you are exempt;
have a level of English language proficiency equivalent to the short-term stream of the TSS visa will generally apply unless the labour agreement provides an English language concession;
have health insurance, unless a Reciprocal healthcare agreement applies;
meet health requirements; and
meet character requirements.
